In his introduction to Robert Jungk’s wake up call, ‘Children of the Ashes’, on the survivors of Hiroshima, the late, great James Cameron writes of what the American military psychiatrist, Robert Jay Lifton called ‘the immersion into death’. Lifton went on to ‘describe how his feelings about Hiroshima were multiplied later by the appalling US atrocity in My Lai, Vietnam.’

Another kind of horror, writes Cameron, is that such atrocities have become ‘an accepted technique …’ There you have it. The deviant, unhinged, criminal sadism, from My Lai to Bagram Airbase in Afghanistan, Abu Ghraib and the litany of inhuman, near unimaginable atrocities in America and Britain’s invasions, are not ‘isolated incidents’, the deranged acts of the occasional ‘bad apple’. The whole barrel needs decontaminating for the salvation of the odd good apple.

This month’s Nation made it clear (again) how short the forty year road is from My Lai to Iraq. What was as shocking as the horrific acts perpetrated by U.S., servicemen (and women) described, was that it was impossible to find anyone who was surprised. Revolted, appalled, deeply shamed, but not surprised. Fairly or not, the perception of America’s armed forces (with Britain not excluded either) is largely that of purveyors of lawless depravity.

The acts described by soldiers included shooting a two year old because of random firing after an explosive device went off, shooting a family dog, shooting a family in a car, where the bodies ‘literally sat in the car for the next three days while we drove by them’. Specialist John Middleton explained a prevalent concept that ‘if they don’t speak English and have a darker skin, they’re not as human as us, so we can do what we want’. Goodness, to think that there are those who believed the western troops were the foreigners in a far away place. ‘A dead Iraqi is just another dead Iraqi – you know, so what?’, said Specialist Jeff Englehart, admitting that ‘guilt … takes root’, on returning home. No doubt, unlike the families of the dead Iraqis, he and his ilk will be sympathized with and treated for post traumatic stress disorder.

What of the: ‘ ..fourteen year old kid with an AK47 (who) decided he’s going to start shooting at this convoy’? He would have been just nine or ten at the time of ’shock and awe’ – and utter pant wetting terror. He would have spent between birth and nine or ten under an embargo which denied children even childhood, with ongoing illegal U.S., and U.K., bombings. ‘Every person got out and opened fire on this kid. Using the biggest weapons we couldind, we ripped him to bits.’

House raids, said Sgt John Burns, involved ‘.. catching them in their sleep’, ripping the man of the house out of bed ‘in front of his wife, tearing ‘the room to shreds … you’ll throw all the clothes on the floor … dump the sofa cushions and basically leave his house looking like a hurricane just hit it.’ Hearts and minds, eh? One squad leader’s mentality was described as to regard every Iraqi as a potential terrorist and ‘ … kill them over here so we don’t have to kill them back in Colorado.’ One has to wonder what threat the ten year old with his three donkeys, all run over by the military, posed to Colorado. And where the seriously psychologically challenged soldier who posed with a spoon reaching to ’scoop out some … brain’, from a dead Iraqi in a body bag, was recruited? Brain matter, transported in jar, to ‘fridge, it has long been reported, is the new ‘trophy’. In Vietnam it was ears, heads, testicles.

Paul Rieckhoff, Executive Director of the Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America, is incensed at the Nation’s revelations. Iraqis are tragically ‘caught in conflict’s crossfire’, bad decisions are sometimes made in ‘the fog of war’. It was the reporting that was ’sensationalist and unethical’, he wrote in a letter to The Independent. ‘Readers, veterans and the Iraqi people deserve better.’ Readers deserve the truth, the veterans told the stories – and the Iraqi people indeed deserve much better : to see many, many of the illegally invading army in the dock, tried with crimes against humanity.

Rieckhoff’s letter rang a My Lai bell. Here again from Michael Bilton and Kevin Sim’s meticulously researched ‘Four Hours in My Lai.

‘ Lt. William Calley was the only serviceman to be charged for part in the massacre of 16th March 1968. He had thrown a defenseless old man down a well and shot him and: ’seeing a baby crawling away from a ditch filled with the dead and dying villagers, threw it back in the pit and shot it.’ Sentenced to life imprisonment, President Nixon ordered he should be released from jail pending appeal. The Rieckhoff of the day, Judge Robert Elliot, releasing Calley on parole explained : ‘War is war, it is not unusual for innocent civilians … to be killed.’ Massacred? Forget it. The Judge helpfully explained that: ‘ when Joshua took the city of Jericho in biblical times, no charges had been brought against him for the slaughter of the civilian population.’

‘ I think there is a good deal of evidence that we thought all along we were a redeemer nation’, wrote the distinguished theologian Reinhold Niebuhr, of Vietnam in general and My Lai in particular : ‘ There was a lot of illusion in our national history. Now it is about to be shattered.’ The mirror images could not be starker. The killings in My Lai: ‘.. took place part maniacally, part methodically … they were accompanied by rape, sodomy, mutilations and unimaginable random cruelties .. it was a Nazi kind of thing ..’, Bilton and Sim say they were told again and again and: ‘Festering sores disfiguring the face of American society (erupted) in all their horror.’

To the army, My Lai was, of course, an aberration: ‘ .. wholly unrepresentative of the manner in which our forces conduct military operations.’ Seventy percent of villages in one province alone, Quang Ngai, had been destroyed by aerial bombardment or artillery, a full two years before My Lai. ‘We are here to kill dinks … that’s our job’, commented one soldier. As in Iraq, there to kill ‘Hajis’, ‘Sand niggers’, ‘Camel jockeys’. And as Vietnam’s decimation, to kill from Al Qaem to Fallujah, to northern Tel Afar, to Baquba, Baghdad and across the nation. To rape, degrade, thieve, defile. These are not ‘isolated incidents’, but numerous documented and first hand reports.

Can it get worse? Oh yes. As Elana Schor and Roxana Tiron report: ‘ At the Pentagon’s request, Senate Defense authorizers, tucked deep within the Defense BIll, a repeal of the Department’s restriction on granting security clearances to ex-convicts, drug addicts and the mentally incompetent.’ (see: Global Research, July 2007).

There are brave U.S., Iraq and Afghanistan veterans crossing the U.S., going to bases, risking imprisonment, attempting to persuade their colleagues to longer participate in these invasions. Two days ago when the vast US Kitty Hawk docked in Australia, colleagues there distributed fact filled leaflets as sailors disembarked. Two uniformed personnel hid many amongst a pile of pizzas they had come to collect and asked that copies of two searing films on Vietnam and Iraq be slipped in their pockets to show back on the ship. Good apples, but back in occupied lands, numerous bad ones, commit atrocities with impunity and having lost ‘imagination … laugh among the dying, unconcerned’.(Wilfred Owen : Insensibility).

The following is an excerpt from the diary of Private First Class Herbert Carter, rifleman, 1st Platoon, Charlie Company, 11th Brigade of the Americal Division in the vicinity of Son My village. 1st Platoon was the leading edge of the air cavalry assault on My Lai 4, one of Son My village’s subdivisions and the location of one of the worst American war crimes ever committed. Pfc. Carter’s diary was essentially a long-form letter, compiled over the course of one to three months and then shipped back home. The diary was confiscated as part of the special damage control probe into My Lai. It was therefore spared the redactions one might expect to see in letters following an incident such as My Lai.

Heya chick, this is the Animal!

I’m coming to you from the ass end of Vietnam! It’s hotter than a rotisserie and wetter than you after five minutes with the Animal in the back seat of my deuce. It’s copasetic though cuz LT brought us some hooch and brews and we’re kicking back relaxing. Duckwiser got his hooks on a couple of reels of stag films and we’re watching those to get hepped up for the mission tomorrow. It’s called Operation Muscatine and we’re supposed to pacify a sector or whatever, which means we shoot up the gooks, smoke out their tunnels and burn down the village.

Mud Dog Captain Ernest “Mad Dog” Medina has a bug up his ass about killing everything that moves so I got one of those little bird things you put on a drink, you know the ones that bob up and down forever, and I stuck that on his bigass map table as we were walking out of briefing with a note saying “Charlie’s Movin’ Man!” and he was all “which one of you chickenshits put this here?” Nobody said nothing so he just looked all pissed off at all of us so the LT just told us to shag ass out of there.
Then when we got back to our bivouacs we were getting ready to break out the church keys and then LT comes in and said that we had to dig a new trench line for the frigging dime nickels like the FAGs couldn’t get off their lazy asses to dig them. They sat there and watched us for an hour although afterwards they gave us some cured swine they found on some dead gomers last week. Everyone was like “that’s boss” but the Animal, well you know me. After we cleared out I went to the latrine and filled like five jerry cans with the crud that is like a mix of number one and number two and smells god awful. Then I took the jerry cans and dumped them all in the trench we just dug for the FAGS. They’ll be knee deep in that tomorrow! Ha ha ha! Animal strikes again.

Anyway chick, hope you’re keepin’ it wet, I’m gonna knock one out thinking of that time at the passion pit when you let me toss little animal between your cheeks. I’ll write more tomorrow.

Hey babe, just writing again real quick because I had to tell you this hilarious thing before I forget it. Right now I’m sittin’ next to this roadside that is totally full of dead gomers. It’s hilarious. 1st Platoon totally wigged out, like LT just stood there and watched while everyone was just going buck wild. What really kicked things off was when this dude was just totally standing there with his cow out in the field and 2nd squad came around this hootch they were burning. The dude threw his arms up in the air like “hey” and Nichols lit him up good and LT didn’t bat an eye. Verona was the funniest, there was this dude standing there with his hands up and Verona just totally stabbed the dude in the stomach with his bayonet. The dude was wheezing and Verona just BAM right in the head. I was in tears.

It got better though. Verona just grabs this old guy who was doing a loaf in his shorts and took out his 45 and shot him in the throat. I was like “hahahaha!” and then he freaking throws the guy in a well. I was totally on the ground laughing by this point and Verona just turned to me and gave me that cockeyed look of his and he dropped a pineapple right down the well. KABOOM! Oh man, I tell you, these guys are like Bob Hope times ten!

Once the gooks realized we weren’t interested in swapping stories this time around they all started running around in every direction and it just got crazier. I saw this old woman, get this, she had a friggin launched m79 in her stomach. I was going to pretend to be a doctor and be like “here is some Rolaids for that and call me in the morning if it still feels bad” but LT shot her in the face with his sidearm.
Then Sam Spade Pfc. Samuel Washington saw some gooks running along the road where I am now and he was like “check it, Animal” and he just lit them all up. He fed a whole chain into them sideways. Lead poisoning! Then me and Verona and Sam Spade headed over to them because a couple were still kicking around. One of them was pretty hot in a slant way and Verona took her shirt off and started jerkin’ the gherkin, but she had a sucker in her lung and he couldn’t get it up. Finally he planted his e-tool in her forehead to shut her up and then knocked one out all over her. Washington had a burlap sack full of teeth and he had emptied ‘em out to play some b-stomp. That’s where you take a gomer baby and stick it in the bag and then drop both heels on it. It’s like a kike wedding or something! POP!

I was gonna knock one out when Verona finished but the gomer looked kind of gross with his nut on her so instead I got underneath a couple of dead old guys and started talking like a ghost. Verona ran and got the LT and I was like “Amellican GI, we will haunt you foll all of time” and even though LT didn’t think it was funny Sam Spade and Verona were cracking in half. Then a couple of the dead gomers started to fart and crap really loud and it was just too much, I doubled over and puked I was laughing so hard.

Ok, whirlybirds are comin’ for some reason so I’m gonna wrap this up. I’ll write more later. I can’t wait to get home and lay some pipe, chick. Hey, if you can, send me some rubbers in your next letter and then I can fill them up and send them back, I don’t know, if that’s gross forget about it.

Oh man baby, things just keep getting funnier. LT had us chasing some gomers and out of the blue a Huey dropped in on us and the pilot was all “durt durt durt, I will fire on you if you don’t let these people go.” And Sam Spade was like “rock and roll then, honkey” but the door gunner was confused so I put this mama san’s face I had cut off over my face and was like “please GI, we just want go here to join our people” and Verona was frigging busting a gut. Then I started to do my “happy talk” dance and even Sam Spade was cracking up. Then I saw this little kid, like maybe five, walk past with his arm shot off and I just couldn’t take it anymore I was laughing so hard. I wish the LT had been around because he would have made that chopper move its fat ass but he was busy chucking frags into hootches half a click away.

Finally the gomers who we were chasing disappear into some jungle and the pilot of the chopper points at us and starts to lift off. Verona dropped trou right there and mooned them as they were heading up. It was the funniest thing I’ve seen all day. He has the runs too and loves peanuts so there were little pieces of peanut all over his ass. That Verona is going to be on stage some day, he’s got an even better sense of humor than your Animal does, baby.

Anyway, I got to go, Mud Dog is landing and he wants to shoot up some gomers so he can recommend himself for another silver star or something. I’ve been thinking about your mom. It’s weird. Do you think she would be willing to drop a loaf on my face while you massage my prostate when I come home on leave? Just a thought.

1st Lieutenant William Calley was the only person involved in the massacre found guilty during court-martial proceedings. He was sentenced to a life of hard labor, but President Nixon intervened the day after his sentencing and ordered him released from prison and confined to quarters pending appeal. Calley’s sentence was eventually reduced to 3 ½ years of quarters confinement. Others charged, including Captain Medina who committed a number of atrocities including the execution of an unarmed woman carrying medicine with two shots to her head, were acquitted during court-martial proceedings. The Americal Division was later disbanded because of the stigma attached following the My Lai massacre’s portrayal in the Western media.

Pilot Hugh Thompson Jr. and others who intervened to prevent further bloodshed were awarded the Soldier’s Medal in 1998 for bravery outside of combat with the enemy. Not a single shot was fired at the members of Charlie Company as they conducted their sweep of My Lai.

An Australian hedge fund manager with $1bn in structured credits and junk-rated loans warned investors yesterday it could restrict withdrawals to ensure its survival as it reported losses of 14 per cent in one fund in June.

Basis Capital, based in Sydney, said in a letter to investors it had been hit by “indiscriminate” repricing of “otherwise fundamentally sound collateral” amid the crisis in US home loans to less creditworthy investors. It said it had deliberately avoided the worst-hit 2006 subprime loans.

The warning that redemptions can be restricted comes as a series of hedge funds in the US and UK have run into trouble from the collapse in price of illiquid, or hard-to-trade, securities linked to subprime loans.

Restrictions on redemptions are closely monitored by hedge fund investors as an indication of trouble.

Any limit tends to prompt a rush for the exit by other shareholders, forcing a fire-sale of assets to raise cash to meet the pay-outs.

Braddock Financial, based in Denver, said last week it would close its $300m Galena Street fund because of redemption requests, while United Capital Holdings, in Florida, suspended redemptions.

Basis Capital, run by Steve Howell and Stuart Fowler, said the quarterly limits it imposed on redemptions – known as gates – were “designed at inception to ensure the fund’s survival through periods of extreme dislocation such as this”.

Rick Bernie, a director, said he expected the gates to be used, although redemption requests had not yet come through. “We’ve always said when the world blows up, if you don’t have a tight enough gate it is like saying, ‘Pick us first’ to redeem,” he said.

Mr Bernie said structured credits were cheap but Basis was not buying because it had to keep enough liquidity to anticipate redemptions.

Basis Yield Alpha fund was down 13.93 per cent in June, only its second monthly loss since it was set up in 2003. Basis Pac-Rim Opportunity fund, with less structured credit exposure, was down 9.2 per cent.

Both funds demand 90 days’ notice for redemptions, which are allowed each quarter, with an extra fee to redeem between those dates.

Hedge fund investors warned that more funds were likely to limit redemptions to prevent forced sales of illiquid assets at low prices, but that the true scale of the problem might not become clear until September.

David Smith, chief investment director of multi-manager funds at GAM, said most funds had quarterly withdrawals, and they would not need to tell investors they were imposing restrictions until the money was due to be repaid.

“It is the end of September, or even December, that everyone will see just how bad it is,” he said.

Wolseley warns US slump could worsen

Housing slump causes a sharp fall in US profits and Wolseley confirms that group results will fall below last year’s level

Wolseley, the building materials group, gave warning today that the dramatic slowdown in the US housing market could get worse as it revealed that profits in its North American business had tumbled 17 per cent in the past year.

The group, which generates half of its revenue in the US, said that pressure caused by the property downturn had pushed prices for lumber and structural panels down by about a quarter.

Steve Webster, finance director, told Times Online that there was still no sign of an upturn in the market and said that conditions in the US could get even bleaker.

“At the end of the day it has been a very challenging year,” he said. “We have already said that this is the worst downturn in the US housing sector since the late 1980s, early 1990s and it could get worse.”

In a trading statement, Wolseley said that the US slowdown, coupled with the weaker US dollar, meant that group pre-tax profits in the 11 months to June 30 had fallen 5 per cent below the level of a year ago.

Profits for the financial year to the end of July will be hit by a further £6 million of restructuring costs in the US as the group closes 24 of the 311 branches run by its Stock business in North America.

Before today the investment bank UBS lowered its forecasts for Wolseley’s full-year profits by £35 million to £765 million. Wolseley made £817 million last year.

Shares in the group fell 15p to £11.40 in early trading.

Mr Webster insisted that although profits would be down, the group was still performing better than most of its rivals on the other side of the Atlantic.

He said that Wolseley’s dividend payout would be unaffected and that it still planned to spend about £450 million on bolt-on acqusitions in the coming year around the world.

He added that although there were mixed signals, the UK housing market seemed strong despite the recent series of interest rate increases from the Bank of England.

Trading profits in the UK, where Wolseley runs Plumb Center and Drain Center, were up 5 per cent in the 11 months to June 30.

Mr Webster said: “I think the UK housing market has been through its downturn. The housing market got tighter 18 months ago, and I think it’s been through that cycle.”

“Vingt personnes dont six sauveteurs, deux policiers, deux cheminots et dix habitants locaux ont été intoxiquées par des fumées”, lit-on dans un communiqué de presse du ministère.

Les victimes ont été hospitalisées à Lvov, leurs jours ne sont pas en danger, selon le ministère.

Un convoi transportant du phosphore du Kazakhstan en Pologne via l’Ukraine a déraillé entre les villages de Krasnoïe et d’Ojidiv, dans la région de Lvov. Quinze wagons-citernes se sont renversés dont six ont pris feu. L’incendie, qui a provoqué un nuage toxique s’étendant sur 90 m2 a été éteint lundi soir, vers 19h30 GMT. Les sapeurs-pompiers ont mis presque cinq heures pour maîtriser les flammes. Plus de 800 habitants de six villages ont été évacués.

Un avion-hôpital du ministère ukrainien des Situations d’urgence est prêt à décoller de Vinnitsa à destination de Lvov.

Le phosphore jaune est une matière toxique dont la dose mortelle se situe entre 0,05 g et 0,15 g pour un adulte.

(Reuters/AFP) Les forces américaines en Irak auraient employé des bombes au phosphore blanc (considéré comme une arme chimique) contre des populations civiles à Falloudja lors de l’offensive de novembre 2004, selon un documentaire diffusé par la télévision publique italienne.

La RAI s’appuie notamment sur le témoignage de Jeff Englehart, un ancien soldat de la Première division d’infanterie qui a pris part à l’offensive. “Je sais que du phosphore blanc a été utilisé. Le phosphore blanc tue indifféremment”, déclare -il, évoquant “des corps brûlés, des enfants et des femmes brûlés”, et expliquant que le phosphore blanc “brûle les corps jusqu’aux os. (…) C’est un nuage qui, dans un rayon de 150 mètres autour du point d’impact se disperse et brûle tous les être humains et les animaux.

Le film rapporte aussi les témoignages de civils de Falloujah. “Une pluie de feu est descendue sur la ville, les gens touchés par ces substances de diverses couleurs ont commencé à brûler. Nous avons trouvé des cadavres avec des blessures étranges. Leurs corps étaient brûlés mais leurs vêtements intacts”, explique Mohamad Tareq Al Deraji, un scientifique de Falloujah qui a fondé en 2004 un “centre d’études pour les droits de l’homme” dans le bastion rebelle.

Pour l’armée américaine, qui assure n’employer aucune arme chimique, le phosphore blanc appartient à la catégorie des armes conventionnelles.

Substance incendiaire qui émet une vive lumière quand elle est exposée à l’air, le phosphore blanc est utilisé par les militaires pour éclairer des zones de combat, mais c’est aussi un puissant agent chimique, mortel pour les humains.

L’usage d’armes incendiaires contre des populations civiles est interdit par la Convention de Genève de 1980. D’après un fonctionnaire de l’ONU à New York, les Etats-Unis n’ont pas signé ce Protocole sur l’interdiction ou la limitation de l’emploi des armes incendiaires. Selon le documentaire de la RAI, les forces américaines ont également utilisé des bombes incendiaires de type Mark 77, une arme similaire au napalm, contre des cibles militaires en Irak. Les auteurs du documentaire citent une lettre du secrétaire d’Etat britannique aux Forces armées, Adam Ingram, et dans laquelle il écrit que 30 de ces bombes ont été larguées sur des objectifs militaires entre le 31 mars et le 2 avril 2003.

Substance incendiaire qui émet une vive lumière quand elle est exposée à l’air, le phosphore blanc est utilisé par les militaires pour marquer des cibles, éclairer des zones de combat ou, à l’inverse, dissimuler des mouvements de troupes. Mais si ils sont utilisés contre des cibles humaines, les bombes au phosphore ont pour effet de carboniser les corps de l’intérieur dans un rayon d’action de plusieurs dizaines de mètres autour de l’impact.

L’usage d’armes incendiaires contre des populations civiles est interdit par la Convention de Genève, notamment par un protocole additionnel datant de 1983. Selon un documentaire diffusé au début du mois par la RAI (télévision publique italienne), c’est pourtant ce qu’auraient fait les forces américaines lors de l’offensive de novembre 2004 contre Falloudja, bastion des insurgés irakiens situé à une cinquantaine de kilomètres à l’ouest de Bagdad.

Le porte-parole du Pentagone, Barry Venable, a démenti catégoriquement cette affirmation, mais un de ses collègues, Bryan Whitman, a reconnu que les bombes au phosphore blanc faisaient partie des stocks d’armes conventionnelles des forces américaines. “Nous les utilisons comme nous utilisons tout autre type d’armes conventionnelles”.

Dans le cas précis de Falloudja, Venable a indiqué que “les forces américaines avaient utilisé du phosphore blanc à la fois dans des opérations classiques de criblage (…) mais aussi lorsqu’elles ont été confrontées à des insurgés retranchés dans des positions à couvert dont elles ne pouvaient les déloger autrement”.

Les militaires qualifient cette technique de “shake-and-bake” (secouer et cuire): des obus au phosphore blanc sont tirés sur des positions ennemies pour faire fuir ses occupants, lesquels s’exposent alors à un intense tir d’artillerie.

Au moment de la diffusion du documentaire par la RAI, un porte-parole des forces américaines à Bagdad, le lieutenant-colonel Steven Boylan, avait dit ne pas se souvenir de l’utilisation de phosphore blanc à Falloudja.

Pour Daryl Kimball, directeur de l’Arms Control Association, basée à Washington, il n’est pas évident que cet usage soit conforme à la convention internationale sur les armes conventionnelles. “Les armes au phosphore blanc ne devraient pas être employées comme n’importe quelle autre arme conventionnelle”, estime-t-il.

MN: Quelle est la place de la Russie parmi les plus grands exportateurs mondiaux d’armements et de matériels de défense?

Poukhov: La Russie fait solidement partie des quatre principaux fournisseurs d’armes. Si les Etats-Unis arrivent à la première place, avec des exportations évaluées à 10-20 milliards de dollars par an, la Grande-Bretagne les talonne, en vendant des armes pour 6 à 7 milliards de livres sterling chaque année. La France, elle, a vendu annuellement en moyenne ces cinq dernières années des armements pour 4,8 milliards d’euros mais ce chiffre n’a représenté que 3,8 milliards en 2005. Ce qui a fait que la Russie, avec ses 6,126 milliards de dollars, s’est hissée au troisième rang. La Russie avait aussi dépassé la France en 2003.

Tout au long de l’histoire postsoviétique de la Russie, la Chine et l’Inde sont restées l L’état actuel des industries de défense russes vu par Rouslan Poukhov, directeur de l’Institut d’analyses stratégiques et technologiques et membre d’un conseil de consultation public auprès du ministère de la Défense, dans un entretien accordé au journal Moscow News (MN).es deux premiers acheteurs des armes russes (engloutissant de 60 à 80% de nos exportations). La situation s’est inversée en 2006, avec la signature du “méga-marché” algérien, de 7,5 milliards de dollars, et d’une série de contrats vénézuéliens, d’un coût de 3 milliards. Sur le carnet de commandes de l’industrie de défense russe estimé de nos jours à 30 milliards de dollars, celles de ces deux pays ne représentent pas moins d’un tiers.

Mais la montée des exportations russes entre 2000 et 2006 s’explique moins par des changements positifs survenant dans l’industrie de défense que par l’accroissement général de la puissance de la Russie, les ventes d’armes relevant d’abord de la politique, ensuite d’opérations de commerce.

Le Venezuela offre un bon exemple sur ce plan. Les premières prises de contact avec Caracas dans ce domaine remontent à 2001-2002. Le président Hugo Chavez était déjà prêt, selon certaines données, à acquérir 50 chasseurs Mig-29, ce qui aurait représenté une bouffée d’air frais pour la société MiG vu les difficultés qu’elle traversait à l’époque. Mais la transaction n’a finalement pas eu lieu car la Russie a cédé aux pressions américaines. En 2006, par contre, quelque chose a changé dans la position russe, au point de nous permettre de vendre au Venezuela des chasseurs Su-30, plus puissants et ayant un rayon d’action plus important. La puissance du pays a augmenté à tel point que la réalisation de telles transactions est devenue possible.

MN: Quelles sont les armes russes les plus demandées dans le monde?

Poukhov: Sur la totalité des ventes, l’aviation représente près de 50% des livraisons, le matériel naval près de 25% et les moyens de DCA 15%. Différents armements terrestres représentent le reste. Le chasseur lourd Su-30, dont les ventes entraînent les exportations de moyens aériens de frappe, d’équipements au sol, d’avions approvisionneurs et d’avions-radars, est le mieux vendu. Les sous-marins diesels de classe Kilo et les systèmes de missiles antiaériens longue portée S-300 sont aussi très demandés.

MN: Et où la Russie accuse-t-elle du retard?

Poukhov: Une situation difficile se crée dans le domaine des drones et, d’une manière plus générale, dans les systèmes de reconnaissance et de télécommunications. Les moyens de frappe aérienne, surtout de la catégorie air-sol, posent également problème.

MN: Quel genre d’armements livre la Russie à la Chine?

Poukhov: Ce sont avant tout les chasseurs Su-27 et Su-30. Depuis la fin de l’URSS la Chine a acheté 280 avions, y compris des lots pour assemblage sous licence. Les Chinois ont aussi acheté en Russie 4 destroyers, 12 sous-marins et nombre de systèmes de DCA. A ce jour, il leur a été livré 28 groupes de batteries S-300. Jusqu’à ces derniers temps, les Chinois n’avaient pratiquement pas acheté d’armes pour l’armée de terre, même les plus récentes, par exemple, les hélicoptères de frappe. La Chine n’a pratiquement pas d’hélicoptères de type Mi-24, Mi-28 ou Apache. Toujours est-il qu’après l’occupation de l’Irak les Chinois ont commencé à s’intéresser aux technologies pour l’armée de terre. Il s’ensuit que si, dans le passé, les Chinois étaient convaincus qu’ils n’auraient jamais à ouvrir des hostilités sur leur propre territoire, ils n’en sont plus aussi sûrs maintenant.

MN: A quel point les ventes russes d’armes à la Chine pourraient-elles menacer à terme la sécurité de la Russie elle-même?

Poukhov: Les principaux risques à l’égard de la Chine ne relèvent pas du domaine militaire. Certes, travailler en direction de l’Inde pose bien moins de problèmes car les armes livrées à New Delhi ne seront jamais à coup sûr tournées contre notre pays.

MN: En 2003, le groupe aéronautique russe Sukhoi a été désigné concepteur pilote du chasseur russe de cinquième génération, opération qui pourrait coûter des milliards de dollars. En avons-nous effectivement besoin?

Poukhov: A peu près dans cinq ans, le F-35, le chasseur américain de cinquième génération, commencera à se répandre massivement dans le monde. Ces appareils pourraient bien équiper les armées des pays ayant des régimes politiques russophobes.

A l’époque où nos troupes sont entrées en Afghanistan (décembre 1979, ndlr.), les Pakistanais disposaient déjà de chasseurs américains F-16 de quatrième génération, alors que notre armée n’était pas encore équipée de MiG-29 ni de Su-27. Nous devions voler sur des chasseurs de troisième génération. Résultat, l’armée de l’air pakistanaise avait potentiellement, en cas de conflit, une supériorité aérienne sur l’Union soviétique.

Aujourd’hui, la Pologne achète déjà des F-16 bloc 52. Mais nous ignorons encore comment la Pologne se comportera pendant la construction du Gazoduc nord-européen (Nord Stream, qui doit relier en direct la Russie et l’Allemagne sous la Baltique, ndlr). Il est vrai, les Polonais n’auront qu’un nombre limité de tels avions. A la première étape d’un conflit hypothétique, avant que ne s’ingèrent l’ONU ou des forces tierces, ils pourraient mener des opérations aériennes efficaces et nous non.

Le projet de Sukhoi est aussi important sur le plan commercial car un avion qui pourrait représenter une alternative aux avions américains de cinquième génération sera obligatoirement demandé dans le monde.

MN: Et qu’en est-il des achats pour l’armée russe?

Poukhov: Presque la moitié de la commande d’armements pour 2007, soit 143 milliards de roubles (environ 4 milliards d’euros) financeront ces achats et, à ce qu’il semble, ce seront surtout des armes de dissuasion nucléaire. Quant aux achats d’armes conventionnelles, ils progressent pour l’instant à un rythme peu élevé.

Je pense qu’il faut être réaliste en évaluant nos possibilités. Il nous faudra peut être renoncer à disposer de sous-marins de plusieurs classes (une seule suffira), ou de plusieurs types d’hélicoptères de frappe. En leur temps, les Américains ont eu assez d’audace pour renoncer à plusieurs types d’armements. Par exemple, au mortier lourd Crusader, lorsqu’il était devenu clair que les armadas de chars soviétiques n’envahiraient pas l’Europe et qu’on n’aurait pas besoin de les bombarder au moyen de ces mortiers. Le programme a été fermé malgré l’argent dépensé. Nous aussi nous devrons encore prendre des décisions difficiles.

Le chef de la diplomatie britannique David Miliband fera lundi un discours au parlement afin d’exposer la meilleure façon de réagir au refus de la Russie d’extrader l’entrepreneur Andreï Lougovoï, accusé par las autorité britanniques du meurtre de l’ancien agent du FSB Alexandre Litvinenko. Le Financial Times avait écrit que l’une des possibilités pourrait être le renvoi de diplomates russes du sol britannique.

Les détails du rapport préparé par le ministère des Affaires étrangères ont été soigneusement conservés. Cependant, une source haut placée au ministère, qui a préféré gardé l’anonymat, a assuré que la réponse serait lourde de conséquences.

De son côté, M. Miliband a déclaré dimanche que le meurtre d’Alexandre Litvinenko était “une affaire extrêmement sérieuse” et que la procédure judiciaire devait être absolument transparente. Il est écrit dans le journal que le secrétaire du Foreign Office avait auparavant catégoriquement refusé d’écarter la solution d’un renvoi de diplomates britanniques de Londres. Selon le journal, c’est précisément cette solution qui sera adoptée.

M. Miliband a également laissé entendre que les liens économiques entre la Russie et la Grande-Bretagne, assez étroits à ce jour, devaient être les moins touchés. Le nouveau premier ministre britannique Gordon Brown partage cette position quant aux relations russo-britanniques. Selon le Financial Times, M. Brown aurait connaissance de tous les détails de l’Affaire Litvinenko et souhaiterait éviter une situation, dans laquelle le commerce entre les deux pays pourrait pâtir de l’intransigeance de la Grande-Bretagne concernant les questions légales.

Comme nous l’avions indiqué, la présidence Sarkozy pourrait s’orienter vers la mise en place d’un Etat policier, avec l’appui de puissances extérieures. D’après l’Elysée, Nicolas Sarkozy se « réjouit » de rencontrer ce lundi le président de la cour suprême américaine, John G. Roberts.

John G. Roberts fait partie du groupe des « schmittlérien » de la cour suprême, puisqu’il est membre de la Federalist Society, qui s’inspire directement du juriste attitré du régime nazi Carl Schmitt. Schmitt a bâti la doctrine de l’ « exécutif unitaire » pour justifier les pleins pouvoirs donnés au chancelier Hitler en mars 1933. La Federalist Society et sa doctrine influencent directement le groupe de juristes qui entoure le vice-président Cheney ; c’est au nom de cette doctrine qu’ont été mises en place les politiques de torture, d’espionnage et d’insubordination au Congrès.

Rappelons qu’une des premières mesures mise en place par l’Elysée depuis mai, est la création de la Direction générale de la sécurité intérieure (DGSI), sur le modèle du Homeland Security américain crée après le 11 septembre 2001, et qui centralise toutes les fonctions policières territoriales afin de lutter contre le terrorisme, les délinquants de banlieue et les « phénomènes subversifs ». Supervisée par son directeur de Cabinet à l’Elysée Claude Guéant -un expert des mécaniques policières puisqu’il était déjà le directeur de cabinet de Sarkozy au ministère de l’intérieur- la DGSI pourrait être emmenée par Bernard Squaricini, alias « le Squale », ancien numéro 2 des RG et nouveau directeur de la DST.

Nous ne pouvons qu’espérer que l’équipe Sarkozy ne franchira pas les limites dépassées par le ministre de l’intérieur allemand Wolfgang Schaüble la semaine dernière. Le correspondant berlinois de RFI rapporte que Schaüble a proposé « des exécutions ciblées de terroristes, (…) suggéré d’empêcher les personnes suspectes d’avoir accès à Internet ou d’obtenir un téléphone portable, et comme aux Etats-Unis, le ministre de l’Intérieur allemand propose de créer un délit pour complot, et de traiter comme des combattants et d’interner les personnes qui mettent en danger la sécurité nationale. »

Lors de son passage à Paris lundi, le juge Roberts va également rencontrer le président du Conseil Constitutionnel, Jean Louis Debré. Il sera également reçu dans les deux plus hautes instances de la justice françaises, le Conseil d’Etat et la Cour de Cassation.

On sait que du côté de l’Elysée, le temps est plutôt à l’ouverture, mais le bon sens voudrait quand même que Nicolas Sarkozy n’aille pas jusqu’à recruter Cheney, ou à adopter ses méthodes, alors que ce dernier est proche de l’éviction.

 L’impérialisme sous le voile de la lutte contre l’islamisme

Depuis la désintégration du bloc dit communiste, les classes dominantes propagent une vision duale du monde opposant l’Occident à l’Orient, la civilisation à la barbarie. Il n’y aurait plus d’antagonisme de classe, juste un affrontement entre le monde judéo-chrétien et le monde arabo-musulman, son antinomie parfaite. La ligne de séparation que les atlantistes creusent est géographique et intangible. Cette fragmentation sur base du credo religieux ou du groupe ethnique est une régression intellectuelle qui relègue en arrière-plan les identités sociales. Les appartenances substitutives font pièces à la conscience sociale et fortifient l’assise de l’ordre dominant.

L’islam est perçu dans l’imaginaire collectif comme un phénomène politico-religieux nuisible et extérieur. Il serait réfractaire à la raison et incompatible avec les valeurs de liberté et d’égalité du monde occidental. On lui reproche par-dessus tout d’être ontologiquement violent. Il glorifierait le sang et la mort. Sous ce regard, l’islam est une entité homogène immobile incapable de se réformer et de s’adapter à la modernité. Il est en somme inférieur à l’Occident. Cette doctrine débouche au terme d’analogies abusives sur une nouvelle forme de racisme : on assimile islam, islamisme, arabe et terrorisme ou autrement dit religion, idéologie, culture, ethnie et moyen d’action.

Cette représentation n’est qu’un paravent idéologique qui dissimule d’une part les ambitions hégémoniques d’un réseau d’influence international et qui consolide d’autre part sa domination. La menace islamiste a été agitée au moment où les contestations sociales s’exprimaient avec le plus de vigueur y compris dans le cœur des Etats-Unis. Un mouvement social anti-systémique parvenait à faire écho de Seattle à Gênes et inquiétait les dirigeants capitalistes. La bourgeoisie devait renforcer dès lors son système immunitaire en renforçant le complexe militaro-policier. Depuis, on a pu observer une inflation inédite des moyens assignés à la surveillance et à la répression : vidéosurveillance, biométrie, fichage. En développant une menace anxiogène, ce sont les citoyens eux-mêmes qui prêchent pour un surplus de sécurité. Le terrorisme est parvenu à donner un blanc-seing illimité dans le temps et dans l’espace à l’impérialisme euro-américain. Il justifie la présence sine die des armées impérialistes dans n’importe quel recoin du monde.

Paradoxalement, l’islamisme sert les intérêts impérialistes en décrédibilisant les mouvements d’émancipation sociaux ou nationaux. Comme toute idéologie, il est l’émanation de son temps et de sa société qu’il soutient. Il n’est ni dans l’essence ni dans les faits une alternative à l’ordre libéral.

Depuis le 11 septembre 2001, des experts autoproclamés ès terrorisme (Claude Moniquet, Alexandre Del Valle, Antoine Sfeir,..) sont montés au créneau pour alimenter une paranoïa collective. Les philosophes réactionnaires et conscience du monde du genre Bernard-Henri Levy ou Alain Finkielkraut y ont trouvé eux aussi leur fonds de commerce en accréditant la thèse de la confrontation civilisationnelle. Selon une logique circulaire, les citations entrecroisées des uns et des autres sont censées avoir valeur de démonstration. Faute de preuves empiriques, les publicistes de l’ordre mondial se contentent de propager les conclusions d’officines gouvernementales pourtant maintes fois confondues de manipulation à grande échelle. Ils participent de la sorte à la construction du fantasme d’une menace externe grandissante et d’une stratégie globale et cohérente de conquête du pouvoir par des groupes jihadistes. S’affranchissant de l’histoire et du cadre socio-économique, ce système explicatif met en liaison un ensemble de mouvements sans parenté. De Bali au Yémen en passant par Bagdad, les banlieues françaises ou les bidonvilles marocains, un seul coupable est désigné : le terrorisme islamiste. Rien ne peut ébranler cette thèse puisque une menace est par définition une virtualité qui peut ne pas prendre forme dans l’immédiat.

Notons par ailleurs que cet embrouillement profite en premier ordre au sionisme qui peut briser la résistance palestinienne au nom de la lutte contre le terrorisme. La posture martiale et expansionniste de Sharon a trouvé un contrefort sans précédent depuis les événements du 11 septembre.

Les idéologues de l’impérialisme proposent l’union sacrée des Etats-Unis, de l’UE et d’Israël pour contrer le péril vert. Pour Claude Moniquet, président de l’ESISC (European Strategic Intelligence and Security Center: club de réflexion traitant des questions de sécurité stratégique), « il est temps de se lever, tous ensemble, chrétiens, musulmans, juifs, athées et autres pour dire haut et fort : la liberté est notre règle en Europe. Elle est inscrite dans nos constitutions, nos lois et nos coutumes et nous ne voulons aucune autre loi. Que ceux qui s’en trouvent insatisfaits aillent vivre ailleurs». Claude Moniquet, inlassable défenseur d’Israël, est un intermittent des medias au même titre que son confrère Alexandre Del Valle . Ce dernier, prétendu spécialiste des questions de géopolitique liées à l’islamisme, affirme sans ambages que « les islamistes ne demandent pas seulement le retrait d’Irak et d’Afghanistan. Ils veulent diviser le front occidental, ne perdant pas de vue leur objectif qui est la conquête de l’Europe… ». Ils sont tous deux relayés et appuyés par les cercles sionistes avec qui ils entretiennent des affinités privilégiées. Bernard-Henri Levy, accoutumé à la phraséologie creuse, fait un parallèle douteux entre l’islamisme et le fascisme : « et puis, en fond de décor, ce à visage islamiste, ce troisième fascisme, dont tout indique qu’il est à notre génération ce que furent l’autre fascisme, puis le totalitarisme communiste, à celle de nos aînés… ».

Il ne faut pas se laisser prendre. L’Islam n’est pas l’ennemi même si les Etats-Unis sont l’ennemi des peuples arabes. Les menaces réelles proviennent de ceux qui prétendent défendre notre liberté tout en nous la restreignant, de ceux qui prétendent imposer la démocratie tout en faisant la guerre.

Le ministre israélien des affaires stratégiques Avigdor Lieberman affirme que les Etats-Unis et l’Europe ont donné le feu vert à Israël pour attaquer l’Iran. Selon un rapport de la Jewish Telegraph Agency, Lieberman est revenu d’une visite au quartier général de l’OTAN à Bruxelles il y a deux semaines, avec l’impression que les puissances occidentales n’ont pas l’intention d’utiliser la force militaire pour mettre un terme au programme nucléaire iranien.

Selon Lieberman, un responsable de l’OTAN lui aurait confié « On [l’OTAN] est coincé en Afghanistan, et les troupes européennes et américaines s’engloutissent dans le marécage irakien, ce qui empêchera les dirigeants européens et américains de décider l’emploi de la force pour détruire les installations nucléaires iraniennes, »« Ainsi, avant la tombée du soir, Israël sera obligé d’écarter la menace nucléaire iranienne avec les moyens dont elle dispose, et elle ne pourra pas compter sur une coopération internationale. »

Newsmax.com, un site d’info très à droite était encore plus provocateur. Il citait Lieberman affirmant le 13 juillet que si Israël lance des frappes contre l’Iran par elle-même, alors « l’Europe et les Etats-Unis nous soutiendront. »

Ancien membre du Likoud, Lieberman dirige le parti nationaliste de droite Israel Beitenou, qui plaide pour le départ des palestiniens d’Israël ainsi que celui des juifs arabes, leur présence étant considérée comme une menace pour « le caractère juif de l’état. »

Sans commenter directement sur les citations attribuées à Lieberman, Ynet.com rapporte qu’il a précisé devant la Knesset le 11 juillet qu’Israël compte finaliser ses préparations pour s’occuper de l’Iran dans un futur proche. « L’état d’Israël doit prendre en compte qu’il devra se charger tout seul [de l’Iran] » disait-il.

Iran demands oil pay in yen not dollars

The dollar fell against the yen this afternoon on reports Iran has asked Japan to stop paying for its oil in dollars

The dollar was driven down against the Japanese yen this afternoon, hit by the news that Iran had asked Japan to pay for its oil purchases in the Japanese currency and not in dollars.

Iran has sent a letter to Japanese refiners, signed by Ali A Arshi, the general manager of crude marketing and exports for Iran’s national Iranian Oil Company, according to a report by Bloomberg.

The letter asks for yen payments “for any/all of your forthcoming Iranian crude oil liftings.” The request is for all shipments “effective immediately”.

Japan’s oil payments to Iran rose 12 per cent last year to 1.24 trillion yen (£5 billion).

The yen dropped against the dollar initially coming down to below 120 from 122.40 but later recovered somewhat on strong consumer confidence data from the US.

Iran has been deliberately moving its exposure to the dollar and dollar-based assets, faced with the threat that the US could freeze its US-based dollar accounts in response to its nuclear plans.

The latest move can only add to the long term pressure on the dollar, already hit by worries about the US economy based on the crisis in the sub-prime mortgage market.

It was also under pressure against the euro and sterling as US retail sales for June showed their sharpest drop for two years.
This was later countered by consumer sentiment data showing consumers had high confidence in July.

By mid session Wall Street was trading up on its record rise from yesterday with the Dow Jones index up 29 points at 13890.

Against the euro the dollar was still close to all-time highs this afternoon at $1.378 and against sterling it was $2.033.

July 13 (Bloomberg) — A new Russian crude oil export pipeline may cut supplies to refineries in Hungary, Slovakia, Germany and some other central European countries, PVM Oil Associates GmbH said.

Russia plans to build a link that will deliver at least 1 million barrels of oil a day for export by tanker from the port of Primorsk the Baltic Sea. The pipeline will also reduce supplies of Urals, Russia’s major export blend of oil, to refiners in Lithuania, Poland, Ukraine and the Czech Republic, said PVM’s Managing Director Johannes Benigni.

The 1,000-kilometer (625-mile) pipeline will run from Unecha, near the Russia-Belarus border, to Primorsk. It will cut deliveries of Urals from Russia through the Druzhba inland pipeline to Europe, forcing central Europe’s refiners to buy more expensive oil from elsewhere, PVM said.

“The reduction of supplies through the Druzhba line will wipe out the price advantage of lower pipeline tariffs compared to seaborne barrels, Benigni said today in an e-mailed statement. “Thanks to cheap crude supplies, refiners along the pipeline enjoy healthier margins than their counterparts who depend on supplies from sea.

Central European refineries will have to pay between 50 cents and $4 a barrel more for seaborne oil deliveries, according to PVM’s report, published today. Higher operating costs may cut refiners’ market value and make them targets for acquisition by OAO Rosneft or OAO Lukoil, Russia’s largest oil producers, which have plans to add processing capacity.

`Turn Sour’

“Costly oil could be a disaster for refiners in Hungary and Slovakia and refinery margins in these countries could easily turn sour,” Benigni said.
Hungary’s Mol Nyrt., eastern Europe’s largest oil refiner by market value, and other regional refiners are the biggest purchasers of Urals oil through the Druzhba pipeline, which crosses Belarus and Ukraine.

Druzhba pipeline oil shipments fell 23 percent to 1.2 million barrels a day in June from the same month last year, according to Russia’s Energy Ministry. Russia has cut supplies through the link to Lithuania after a leak was reported last year.

Russia has had a “transport jam” since the collapse of the Soviet Union, First Deputy Prime Minister Sergei Ivanov said on July 8, cited in a report posted on OAO Transneft’s Web site. Primorsk will be able to load as much as 130 million tons a year (2.6 million barrels a day) of crude and oil products, according to Ivanov.

Transneft, Russia’s state-owned oil pipeline monopoly, will build the new link, or the second phase of the so-called Baltic Oil Pipeline System. It will cost as much as $2.5 billion in investment and will take 18 months to complete, PVM said.

European refiners usually buy Urals at a discount to Brent oil, which is pumped in the North Sea. Brent crude oil for July settlement gained 79 cents at $77.19 a barrel on the ICE Futures exchange at 1:35 p.m. in London. Urals traded in the Baltic Sea rose $1.17 at $75.10 a barrel yesterday.

Pipeline Reversal

Restricted supplies through Druzhba may encourage the reversal of a pipeline planned to ship oil from Bratislava in Slovakia to Austria’s Schwechat refinery, according to PVM.

OMV AG, central Europe’s biggest oil company, and Russia’s OAO Yukos Oil Co. in 2003 agreed to invest 28 million euros ($39 million) to build the 72,000 barrel-a-day link to supply crude from Druzhba to Schwechat refinery. Transpetrol AS, a Slovak pipeline company in which Yukos owns a 49 percent stake, had planned to build the 60-kilometer stretch.

“Changing circumstances might force operators to reverse the flow of oil” to Bratislava, PVM said.

Yukos has sought to sell a 49 percent stake in Transpetrol.

This is a huge story, probably the biggest economic story that you’ll read for the next month. For those that don’t know I’ll try to bring you up to speed. The Druzhba pipeline flows through Polakistan, who has recently agreed to install a US missle defense system that target Polakistans neighbor Russia. The irony of this part of the story is this pipeline is refered to as the Friendship Pipeline. Before Polaks agreed to do this the Druzhba pipeline was delivering 1.6 million barrels of crude each and every day. With friends like Polaks it’s easy to understand why their neighbors throughout history have constantly invaded them.

Now the real juicy part of the Druzhba Pipeline is of course what the Bloomberg author conviently forgets somehow to point out. How the Anglo Press can constantly forget this important point of the story is beyond me, but it helps one to understand if Bloomberg can overlook the biggest economic part of this story, what are they leaving out for all those other economic stories? The Druzba Pipeline requires Uncle Bucks for oil to flow across Polakistan. It really doesn’t matter that Russia has repeatedly stated they’ve collected enough Green Pieces of Paper for their precious Natural Resources, Polaks force Russians to accept d0llars. Now why the hell would a European country if you can call Polakistan European want to charge D0llars instead of Euros to conduct trade in Europe? Fortuantely for Russia the story states that this will only last at the longest another 18-months.

Primorsk will be able to load as much as 130 million tons a year (2.6 million barrels a day)

This is pretty amazing because no more than two years ago Primorsk was only exporting 50 million tons of crude per year. Odd the honest boyz at Bloomberg don’t mention this fact either. Why the HUGE increase in exports out of Primorsk, some uninformed, lied to western reader might wonder. Hell the Western press says we’ll run out of oil next week, why’s Russia exporting their oil in the first place? Well the exports shipping out of Primorsk don’t require d0llars for Russian oil, hell they refuse to accept d0llars for Russian oil, at 2.6 million barrels per day that’s a huge dent in Petrol D0llar recycling, exports through the Friendship Pipeline are already off 23% since June of last year when all this Polak Missile Defense Shield bullshit got started.

This part is really funny

I like this because at the time Yukos was still Rothschild property in 2003, well that’s no longer the case anymore.

I can’t imagine the rest of Europe wants to pay with d0llars for Russia’s oil, the only country to really be screwed by this is Polakistan, maybe the Ukraine, but it looks like the Ukraine is getting ready to rejoin the Russia sphere of influence instead of the UK/US Israeli sphere of influence that the Orange Revolution was financed by. This is going to be an interesting next six months, because once again the Bloomberg story forgets to add that Russian’s don’t even need this new pipeline to be completed before they can shut Polakistan’s Friendship Pipeline down, Russian Railroad already has the capacity to export the required crude through Primorsk.
