Resort to Deception
Resort to Deception
By Ghali Hassan
”The colonial invasion of Iraq and the ugliest of lies of the lie machine that propagated and justified these barbarous acts will forever remain among the greatest and unpardonable crimes against humanity.”
- Jose Luis Zapatero, Prime Minister of Spain, 20 May 2005.
The resort to deception by governments and the mass media to manipulate the population has been an obsession of Western powers. The illegal invasion and occupation of Iraq by U.S. forces provides the best recent example murderous atrocities based on deception.
In their seminal book ‘Weapons of Mass Deception’, Sheldon Rampton and John Stauber wrote: “The bush administration has engaged in a deliberate and extraordinarily aggressive effort to rally public support for a war on Iraq, using propaganda, misinformation, distortions and outright lies”.
From the big lie of Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD) invented in Washington and London to the big lie of Abu Mussab Al-Zarqawi, the alleged Al-Qaeda mastermind, resort to deception is the art of Western powers.
Despite mounting evidence that Al-Zarqawi was killed in northern Iraq at the beginning of the war, his phantom is used to justify the ongoing atrocity in Iraq. “Al-Zarqawi’s family, in Jordan, even held a ceremony after his death,” said Jawad Al-Khalessi, a Muslim Imam in Baghdad. “Abu Mussab Al-Zarqawi is thus a bogyman used by the Americans, an excuse to continue the occupation. He’s simply an invention by the occupiers to divide the people,” added Al-Khalessi.
The alleged presence of Al-Zarqawi has two important purposes for the U.S. Occupation: it provides a way to distort the image of the legitimate Iraqi Resistance; and it allows the occupying forces to present the war of Occupation as a war against Al-Qaeda, the created enemy. Al-Qaeda has replaced Communism. “The primary aim of the Pentagon’s ‘Strategic Information’ program or propaganda is to distort the truth in a way that controls the storyline created by the media. Al-Zarqawi fits perfectly within this paradigm of intentional deception,” writes American author Mike Whitney.
Al-Qaeda (the ‘Base’ in Arabic) was the C.I.A.-sponsored training camp for the Afghan Mujahideen, including Osama bin Laden and the likes. The group was created and financed by the U.S. administration against the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan. They were called “freedom fighters” by former U.S. president Roland Reagan.
As a result of the invasion and occupation of Afghanistan, Al-Qaeda has disintegrated. Its members have been killed, imprisoned and some have melted away in the population of Afghanistan and Pakistan. However, in George Bush’s “war on terror”, today’s Al-Qaeda is alive and fighting on many fronts. In other words, Osama bin Laden is much more useful alive to U.S. imperialism and propaganda than his dead body. Al-Qaeda has become a convenient phantom to justify an ongoing war on defenceless peoples.
The continuing existence of Al-Qaeda is a very useful pretext for the Blair-Bush axis and allies. It provides the necessary tool to instil fear and manipulate domestic public opinion. A U.S. army conscientious objector from the 82nd Airborne Division told the Canadian Refugee Status Commission: “We were told to consider all Arabs as potential terrorists … and we were stimulated to encourage an attitude of hatred that gets your blood boiling.” The recent massacre of unarmed men women and children in Fallujah is a case in point.
Just before the destruction of the city of Fallujah, in which thousands of innocent men, women and children have been murdered, U.S. forces justified the assault as a necessary step to “enhance democracy” and “flush-out” Al-Zarqawi and his men. After Fallujah was destroyed, and a large number of its people were slaughtered by U.S. forces, Al-Zarqawi was not found — because he was dead a long time ago. Fallujah has since become the symbol of Iraqi Resistance.
During the U.S. attacks on Mosul, Ramadi and Al-Qaim, the phantom of Al-Zarqawi continues to play an important role in Western propaganda of deception. It was reported that Al-Zarqawi had survived the assault on Fallujah and is fighting the U.S. forces on many fronts. Nothing could be further from the truth. The attacks were directed primarily against members of the Iraqi Resistance and the Iraqi population at large. “Al-Zarqawi is nothing more than a weapon of mass deception in the hands of the US army, which enables the latter to hide its ‘black propaganda’ activities, used to mount the population against the Resistance,” said Mohamed Hassan, a former Ethiopian diplomat and Middle East specialist.
The U.S. attacks on the city of Tal Afar have also been justified as a “necessary operation against Al-Zarqawi and his groups of foreign fighters”. A sole journalist from the Iraqi daily Azzaman, who was the only journalist in town, refused to support the U.S. version. Most of the fighters were Iraqis fighting against foreign occupation forces. The attacks on the city of 300,000 people are described by complicit Western media as a “joint U.S. and Iraqi” operation. However, Azzaman reported: “Iraqi soldiers are too few to spot among the thousands of U.S. marines. U.S. troops now see all men able of carrying arms as suspects and many of those attempting to flee have been arrested.” Like Fallujah, a large number of innocent civilians have been killed and the fate of 400 Iraqi young male detainees is not known.
In contravention of the Geneva Convention and international law, water and electricity have been cut off, and the occupation forces are preventing any food and medical assistance to enter the city, increasing an even worse human disaster and enlarging the U.S. atrocity against the Iraqi people. Like Fallujah, the majority of Tal Afar’s population are now displaced refugees in their own country. “Some of these families live in deserted villages or in makeshift camps where they do not have access to basic essentials like food and water. We are in need of urgent relief to offer assistance to nearly 5,000 families who have fled the city and sought asylum in nearby poor villages,” said a statement by the Iraqi Red Crescent.
While Westerners watching their favourite TV shows, the U.S. and its collaborators are waging full scale war against the Iraqi people. After the massacre of Tal Afar, U.S. occupation forces are moving into the Euphrates valley, to destroy more Iraqi towns and cities, and at the same time commit more war crimes against the people of Iraq. The “international community” has failed to condemn the violence perpetuated by U.S. occupying forces, and also failed to provide the minimum assistance to a nation considered to be a founding member of the “international community”. The Iraqi people are left at the mercy of a new form of Western terrorism. The aim is not to fight the Resistance, but to kill Iraqis en masse and destroy their nation, with the blessing of a puppet government constituted of criminals and conmen.
In its recent meeting attended by world’s leaders, the UN was unable to define terrorism, because, according to the U.S., terrorism has no definition. Any act of violence not practised by the U.S. and its allies is defined as terrorism. We know who is waging a war of terror on the defenceless people of Iraq. It isn’t Al-Qaeda or Al-Zarqawi: it is the U.S. and Britain who are terrorising the Iraqi people on a daily basis. Iraq is not the frontline of terrorism; the Iraqi people are defending themselves and their country against terrorism.
Meanwhile, in Baghdad, the car bombings which targeted civilians were the work of Al-Zarqawi “suicide bombers” against Shiites to “foment civil war”, we are told . There was no evidence to substantiate the allegations, and Iraqis have a different idea. Although most of the bombings were timed and remote-controlled bombs, the majority were premeditated attacks. Furthermore, Iraqis acknowledge that there were few attacks executed by “suicide bombers”. However, in the West, “suicide bombing” is becoming everything Muslim, fabricated and promoted by the mainstream mass media, including the Arab CNN, Al-jazeera.
As I wrote earlier, Iraqi sources argued rightly that the U.S. forces and their collaborators are behind every major sectarian killing and kidnapping in the country. The promotion of Shiite-Sunni conflict is the creation of U.S. forces. The attacks on specific religious groups, such as on Shiites, were aimed at provoking sectarian strife among Iraqis. After every large killing of civilians, the U.S. and mainstream media are deliberately blaming the Iraqi Resistance for the violence. The main aim is to distort the image of the Resistance and weaken its popular support in Iraq and abroad.
The fact that Iraqi Police in Basra were able to arrest two British soldiers (the SAS) working under cover, whom Iraqi police accused of planting bombs against civilians, was a case in point. Furthermore, thousands of prominent Iraqi scientists including doctors, intellectuals and politicians have been murdered by Israeli Mossad and C.I.A. agents. Similar patterns of Western terrorism against civilians have its history in the British occupation of Kenya and India, and in the Israeli occupation of Palestine. The U.S. plan to divide Iraq – on ethnic and religious lines – and control its wealth was prepared several years before the war. It was no secret. One only needs to read the New York Times to get an idea about the U.S. Zionist ideology. In addition, the U.S. is promoting religious fundamentalism against Iraqi nationalism.
U.S. forces and their collaborators are the only benefactors of ongoing violence in Iraq. The U.S. is deliberately destroying the fabric of the Iraqi society. Since March 2003, more than 200,000 have been killed – based on the estimation of the Lancet report in November 2004. The majority of these war crimes were committed by U.S. and British forces against innocent men women and children. The war is one of most cowardly fought wars in the history of mankind. Iraq was forced to disarm – by the tool of U.S. foreign policy, the UN – before Iraq was massively attacked by the most modern WMD. It was a one-sided war of large armies against the defenceless people of Iraq. It was nothing to do with WMD, ‘democracy’ or human rights. It was a war to control Iraq oil resources, enhance U.S. hegemonic domination, and promote Israel’s Zionist expansionism.
Since the invasion of their country by U.S. forces, Iraqis have only known mayhem, all forms of human rights abuses, including torture, and a culture of corruption not seen in Iraq’s history. The U.S. is continuing the process of the complete destruction of Iraq. U.S. corporations are not building Iraq, they are busy building prisons to incarcerate Iraqis, and military bases in order to continue the colonial occupation of Iraq. The imperial deception is so efficient that even well-educated people in the West, and Americans in particular, have been manipulated to the extent that they were unable to differentiate between the destruction of a society by violent military forces and the promotion of ‘democracy’ and ‘freedom’.
The invasion and occupation of Iraq was a premeditated murderous act of aggression. It was the result of the Anglo-American power resort to deception to manipulate the population into accepting a criminal attack on a defenceless nation. A campaign of fabricated deception continues to justify the violent occupation of Iraq by U.S. forces. The only effective remedy for the crimes committed against the Iraqi people is the immediate and full withdrawal of U.S. forces from Iraq.

Ankara may alter relationship with IMF
Ankara may alter relationship with IMF
By: Vincent Boland
Turkey’s government on Thursday unveiled a budget for next year that envisages a sharp rise in public spending and a lowering of a key fiscal savings target that has formed the central pillar of its $10bn loan agreement with the International Monetary Fund.
Kemal Unakitan, finance minister, said the primary surplus – the budget surplus before interest payments – would be 5.5 per cent in the 2008 budget, compared with 6.5 per cent in each year since Turkey and the IMF agreed a recovery package from a devastating financial crisis in 2001.
The lowering of the primary surplus target could signal that Turkey is getting ready for a fundamental change in its relationship with the IMF when the loan agreement expires next May. An IMF team that had been in Turkey for the past two weeks left Ankara on Thursday without completing a scheduled review of the agreement, and discussions are to continue in Washington during the annual meetings of the Fund and the World Bank.
Ozgur Altug, chief economist at Raymond James Securities, said in a note to investors on Thursday: “We sense that the government is not willing to renew the bn loan deal, but relations with the IMF will continue in a weaker form.”
Mr Unakitan said that lowering the target did not mean any easing of the government’s tight fiscal policy. The budget envisages a rise in spending next year of 10 per cent, economic growth of 5.5 per cent, inflation of 4 per cent, and a rise in income per head to $7,000 (€4,390, £3,435) from about $5,500 this year.
The government’s decision to reduce the primary surplus target could be part of a wider reorientation of economic policy away from strict adherence to IMF-inspired targets that may either be no longer relevant or conflict with the government’s wider economic agenda; an agenda increasingly focused on maintaining high levels of economic growth based on structural reforms, privatisation, and foreign direct investment inflows.
“Our experts decide on the primary surplus that Turkey needs, and 6.5 per cent is not any kind of magic number,” Mr Unakitan said. “With or without the IMF, fiscal discipline and continued structural reform are what Turkey requires.”
Analysts said the lowering of the primary surplus target for next year may also reflect the reality that it has failed to meet it for 2007 because of election-inspired extra spending earlier in the year. But they suggested that the Turkish central bank, which this week cut its benchmark interest rate by 50 basis points, might have felt more comfortable in cutting rates further in the next few months if the 6.5 per cent target had been retained.

Looks like Turkey has found another source of funding, I wonder if it’s Russia or China. Now we start to understand why Turkey was being demonized in the press…
Castro Claims Bush Could Spark WWIII
Castro Claims Bush Could Spark WWIII
By WILL WEISSERT
Associated Press Writer
HAVANA (AP) — Fidel Castro wrote Tuesday President Bush is threatening the world with nuclear war and famine – an attack on Washington a day before the White House plans to announce new plans to draw Cuba away from communism.
“The danger of a massive world famine is aggravated by Mr. Bush’s recent initiative to transform foods into fuel,” Castro wrote in Cuban news media, referring to U.S. support for using corn and other food crops to produce gasoline substitutes.
The brief essay titled “Bush, Hunger and Death” also alleged that Bush “threatens humanity with World War III, this time using atomic weapons.”
Bush is expected to announce new strategies toward Cuba on Wednesday. White House spokesman Tony Fratto said last week that Bush would “emphasize the importance of democracy for the Cuban people and the role the international community can play in Cuba’s transition by insisting on free speech, free assembly, free and competitive elections and the release of all political prisoners.”
In his essay, Castro predicted that Bush “will adopt new measures to accelerate the ‘transition period’ in our country, equivalent to a new conquest of Cuba by force.” Cuban officials have long denounced U.S. efforts to produce a “transition” from Castro’s government to a Western-style representative democracy.
Ailing and 81, Castro has not been seen in public since undergoing emergency intestinal surgery and ceding power to a provisional government headed by his younger brother Raul in July 2006.
While he has looked upbeat and lucid in official videos, he also seems too frail to resume power.
Life on the island has changed little under Raul Castro, the 76-year-old defense minister who was his elder brother’s hand-picked successor for decades.
Cuba staged municipal elections on Sunday, the first step in a process that will determine if Fidel Castro is re-elected or replaced next year as Cuban leader.

PM Erdoğan to press Olmert to give up supporting Iraqi Kurds
PM Erdoğan to press Olmert to give up supporting Iraqi Kurds
Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan will bring the issue of Israeli experts’ training of military forces in the autonomous Kurdish region of northern Iraq to the agenda in his talks with his Israeli counterpart, Ehud Olmert, scheduled to take place today in the British capital.
A spokesperson for Olmert, who arrived in Paris on Sunday, announced on Monday that he will meet with Erdoğan today in London.
Erdoğan departed yesterday from Ankara for London for an official visit during which he will also have talks with British Prime Minister Gordon Brown.
Although Olmert’s spokesperson said in Paris that talks between the Israeli and Turkish leaders would focus on Iran’s nuclear ambitions and Israeli-Palestinian peace moves, a senior Turkish governmental official, speaking with Today’s Zaman on Monday on condition of anonymity, said Erdoğan was carrying Turkish intelligence reports concerning Israeli activity in northern Iraq — where Israeli experts have been training Iraqi Kurdish military forces — to London.
He will urge Olmert to put an end to these activities, at a time when Turkey intends to launch a military operation into northern Iraq to tackle the presence of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) there.
In November 2006, Pulitzer Prize-winning, leading American investigative journalist Seymour Hersh wrote that the PKK’s Iranian offshoot, the Party for a Free Life in Kurdistan (PJAK), which has been behind a string of deadly attacks on security forces in northwestern Iran in recent months, received support from the US as well as Israel, which fears Iran’s nuclear ambitions.

Tests reveal high chemical levels in kids’ bodies
NEW YORK (CNN) –
Michelle Hammond and Jeremiah Holland were intrigued when a friend at the Oakland Tribune asked them and their two young children to take part in a cutting-edge study to measure the industrial chemicals in their bodies.
“In the beginning, I wasn’t worried at all; I was fascinated,” Hammond, 37, recalled.
But that fascination soon changed to fear, as tests revealed that their children — Rowan, then 18 months, and Mikaela, then 5 — had chemical exposure levels up to seven times those of their parents.
“[Rowan's] been on this planet for 18 months, and he’s loaded with a chemical I’ve never heard of,” Holland, 37, said. “He had two to three times the level of flame retardants in his body that’s been known to cause thyroid dysfunction in lab rats.”
The technology to test for these flame retardants — known as polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) — and other industrial chemicals is less than 10 years old. Environmentalists call it “body burden” testing, an allusion to the chemical “burden,” or legacy of toxins, running through our bloodstream. Scientists refer to this testing as “biomonitoring.”
Most Americans haven’t heard of body burden testing, but it’s a hot topic among environmentalists and public health experts who warn that the industrial chemicals we come into contact with every day are accumulating in our bodies and endangering our health in ways we have yet to understand.
“We are the humans in a dangerous and unnatural experiment in the United States, and I think it’s unconscionable,” said Dr. Leo Trasande, assistant director of the Center for Children’s Health and the Environment at the Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York City.
Trasande says that industrial toxins could be leading to more childhood disease and disorders.
“We are in an epidemic of environmentally mediated disease among American children today,” he said. “Rates of asthma, childhood cancers, birth defects and developmental disorders have exponentially increased, and it can’t be explained by changes in the human genome. So what has changed? All the chemicals we’re being exposed to.”
Elizabeth Whelan, president of the American Council on Science and Health, a public health advocacy group, disagrees.
“My concern about this trend about measuring chemicals in the blood is it’s leading people to believe that the mere ability to detect chemicals is the same as proving a hazard, that if you have this chemical, you are at risk of a disease, and that is false,” she said. Whelan contends that trace levels of industrial chemicals in our bodies do not necessarily pose health risks.
In 2004, the Hollands became the first intact nuclear family in the United States to undergo body burden testing. Rowan, at just 1½ years old, became the youngest child in the U.S. to be tested for chemical exposure with this method.
Rowan’s extraordinarily high levels of PBDEs frightened his parents and left them with a looming question: If PBDEs are causing neurological damage to lab rats, could they be doing the same thing to Rowan? The answer is that no one knows for sure. In the three years since he was tested, no developmental problems have been found in Rowan’s neurological system.
Trasande said children up to six years old are most at risk because their vital organs and immune system are still developing and because they depend more heavily on their environments than adults do.
“Pound for pound, they eat more food, they drink more water, they breathe in more air,” he said. “And so [children] carry a higher body burden than we do.”
Studies on the health effects of PBDEs are only just beginning, but many countries have heeded the warning signs they see in animal studies. Sweden banned PBDEs in 1998. The European Union banned most PBDEs in 2004. In the United States, the sole manufacturer of two kinds of PBDEs voluntarily stopped making them in 2004. A third kind, Deca, is still used in the U.S. in electrical equipment, construction material, mattresses and textiles.
Another class of chemicals that showed up in high levels in the Holland children is known as phthalates. These are plasticizers, the softening agents found in many plastic bottles, kitchenware, toys, medical devices, personal care products and cosmetics. In lab animals, phthalates have been associated with reproductive defects, obesity and early puberty. But like PBDEs, little is known about what they do to humans and specifically children.
Russ Hauser, an associate professor of environmental and occupational epidemiology at the Harvard School of Public Health, has done some of the few human studies on low-level phthalate exposure. His preliminary research shows that phthalates may contribute to infertility in men. A study led by Shanna Swan of the University of Rochester in New York shows that prenatal exposure to phthalates in males may be associated with impaired testicular function and with a defect that shortens the space between the genitals and anus.
The Environmental Protection Agency does not require chemical manufacturers to conduct human toxicity studies before approving their chemicals for use in the market. A manufacturer simply has to submit paperwork on a chemical, all the data that exists on that chemical to date, and wait 90 days for approval.
Jennifer Wood, an EPA spokeswoman, insists the agency has the tools to ensure safe oversight.
“If during the new-chemical review process, EPA determines that it may have concerns regarding risk or exposure, the EPA has the authority to require additional testing,” she said. EPA records show that of the 1,500 new chemicals submitted each year, the agency asks for additional testing roughly 10 percent of the time. The EPA has set up a voluntary testing program with the major chemical manufacturers to retroactively test some of the 3,000 most widely used chemicals.
Trasande believes that is too little, too late.
“The problem with these tests is that they are really baseline tests that don’t measure for the kind of subtle health problems that we’re seeing,” Dr. Trasande said.
In the three years since her family went through body burden testing, Michelle Hammond has become an activist on the issue. She’s testified twice in the California legislature to support a statewide body burden testing program, a bill that passed last year. Michelle also speaks to various public health groups about her experience, taking Mikaela, now 8, and Rowan, now 5, with her. So far, her children show no health problems associated with the industrial chemicals in their bodies.
“I’m angry at my government for failing to regulate chemicals that are in mass production and in consumer products.” Hammond says. “I don’t think it should have to be up to me to worry about what’s in my couch.”
US Food Riots Much Closer Than You Think
US Food Riots Much Closer Than You Think
From Robert Felix
Recently, I said “we’ll be fighting in the streets for food long before we’re buried in ice.” I say the same thing in my book Not by Fire but by Ice.
I just received an email from a reader that sums it up better than I did…
“I spent about thirty years working in commercial agribusiness.
My main job was to purchase ingredients, mainly grain, for flour mills and animal feed mills.
As a part of my job, I was forced to understand the US food supply system, its strengths and weaknesses. Over the years, I became aware of some things that nearly all Americans are completely unaware of. I am going to make a list of statements and then you will see where I’m going.
– 1% of the US population grows all of the food for all Americans.
– Nearly all Americans know essentially nothing about where the food they eat every day comes from. How it gets from the ground to them. And they don’t want to know about it. It’s cheap, as close as their local store, and of high quality. So no worries.
– The bulk of the food we eat comes from grain.
Although they raise a lot of fruits and vegetables in California, Arizona, Florida, Oregon and Washington, those things don’t compose the main part of the average diet. Half of what a meat animal is raised on is grain so when you eat meat you are really eating grain. And, of course, we eat grain directly as bread, bagels, doughnuts, pasta, etc. Milk (and milk products like cheese) comes from cows that eat grain. A lot of grain. And the grain they eat is not produced where the cows are located.
– The lion’s share of grain produced in the US is done in a concentrated part of the US Midwest (Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri is the center of this area). The grain is moved to the coasts (where 70% of the population live) by only TWO (2) railroads.
– Nothing is stored for very long in a supermarket. One day grain travels (by rail) from Kansas to Seattle to a flour mill.
The next day the flour mill makes the flour and sends it to a bakery. The next day the bakery makes it into bread (and other baked things) and the next day it is at the store where it is purchased that day. Nobody stores anything. The grain is produced and stored in the Midwest and shipped daily in a single railroad pipeline to the rest of America where the people live.
– Up until the 1980s there was a system that stored a lot of grain in elevators around the country. At one time, a whole year’s harvest of grain was stored that way.
But since taxpayers were paying to store it, certain urban politicians engineered the movement of that money from providing a safety net or backup for their own food supply in order to give the money to various other social welfare things. So now, nothing is stored. We produce what we consume each year and store practically none of it. There is no contingency plan.
Now for my take on what this means for us and what it has to do with the topic you are publicizing.
– If a drought such as has lingered over other parts of the US where little grain is grown were to move over the grain-producing states in the Midwest where few people live, it
would seriously damage the food supply of the country and the apples of Washington, the lettuce of California, the grapefruit of Florida and the peanuts of Georgia won’t make up the difference because grain is the staff of life and most of it is grown in the Midwest.
– Americans are armed to the teeth. In LA people burned down their own neighborhoods to protest a court case.
– In order for riots to break out the whole food supply doesn’t have to be wiped out. It just has to be threatened sufficiently.
When people realize their vulnerability and the fact that there is no short term solution to a severe enough drought in the Midwest they will have no clue as to what they should do.
Other nations can’t make up the difference because no other nation has a surplus of grain in good times let alone in times when they are having droughts and floods also. It takes two or three months to raise grain, yet people have to eat usually at least once a day, usually more than that.
–So, basically, we have in place a recipe for a disaster that will dwarf any other localized disasters imaginable.
The important thing to note is that there is no solution for this event. There is no contingency plan for this.
People living in certain parts of the US will fare better than others (which is another story) but those who live in big cities,
where most of the US population live, are done for.
Anyway, I have no agenda of my own concerning this.
I just thought I’d share it with someone who appears to have an idea of what might likely cause this scenario to occur. The only people who know about this are those who are involved in the production and distribution of the food supply and there are very, very few of them number-wise. And most of them haven’t put two and two together yet, either.
* * *
When I asked the reader for permission to publish this,
I received this reply:
I’m not interested in notoriety about this.
It’s just something I know about.
It’s likely too late for the government to do anything to prepare for such an event, so it probably won’t do any good to try to lobby them for a solution. I guess if they hopped right on it they could store up enough grain to be ready but they won’t.
They’re more concerned with urban political issues and helping
(or invading -ed) other countries than they are about preserving the security of their own food supply.
I guess the people who could make it happen have bunkers or something they can hide in when the ’s’ hits the fan.

Iran completes move away from dollar reserves

Washington: Iran’s central bank governor has said that the country has completed the process of diversifying its external reserves away from the dollar.
Tahmasb Maaheri, who took over as the central bank governor of the country, told Washington-based Emerging Market magazine the process of diversification is almost 100 per cent.
“We have done our best to implement this diversification in both our resources, instruments and forex reserves in order to get maximum out of our assets,” he said.
Currently, most of Iran’s trading partners are making payments for oil in currencies other than the dollar.
Iran’s move to diversify away from the dollar has been partly motivated by political tensions with the US and partly due to the weakness of the dollar in the past two years.
In recent years, Iran has been calling for reserve diversification and pricing of oil against a basket of currencies.
Although many countries in the Middle East are not as vocal as Iran, recent statistics from US Treasury Department indicate that many of them are diversifying their reserves away from dollar denominated assets.
Data
The latest data from the US Treasury showed outflows of $163 billion from all forms of US investments in August. While Japan and China led the withdrawals, the new revelation has increased fears of further withdrawals, significantly by Gulf central banks and government-owned funds.
Asian investors sold $52 billion worth of US Treasury bonds in August. While Japan sold US Treasuries worth $23 billion, China and Taiwan sold $14.2 billion and $5 billion, respectively. It is the first time since 1998 that foreigners have sold Treasuries so heavily.
Gulf central banks, which hold only a fraction of their total foreign exchange reserves, continue to maintain more than 70 per cent of their reserves in dollar denominated assets.
However, the government-owned investment funds who control the bulk of oil export earnings, are understood to be diversifying away from dollar-denominated assets.
While Qatar recently admitted that it has diversified more than 50 per cent of its assets, investment banking sources have confirmed that most Gulf-based sovereign wealth funds have active currency strategies and many of them are diversifying their holdings.
