Hamas: France helps Israel in Gaza siege
Hamas has condemned the deployment of a French frigate off the coast of Gaza, saying it would reinforce an Israeli blockade on the strip.
Prime Minister Ismail Haniya lashed out at French President Nicolas Sarkozy over the deployment of the warship to the area allegedly to fight ‘arms smuggling’ into the coastal region.
“We expected France, whose motto is ‘liberty, equality, fraternity’ to send hospital ships to treat the children burned by banned weapons or to set up a humanitarian bridge… rather than deploy a navy ship to reinforce the blockade,” said Haniya in a statement Tuesday.
Israel’s 18-month old blockade and its 22-day military campaign has created an unprecedented humanitarian crisis in the Palestinian coastal silver.
The deployment was ordered Friday in cooperation with Israel and Egypt as part of “immediate actions to fight against the smuggling of weapons towards Gaza.”
“We are astonished by the European position which blames the victims and the oppressed people for the tragedy that befell the Gaza Strip,” said Haniya.
After having failed to prevent Hamas arming through a 22-day full-scale offensive against the movement, Israel signed a deal with the United Stated to stop arrival of arms into the region.
Following the agreement, Sarkozy ordered the deployment of a frigate to international waters off the coast of Gaza, saying the warship will conduct “surveillance in international waters off Gaza, in full cooperation with Egypt and Israel.”
Sarkozy had also told Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner, to “coordinate closely” with the US and Europe as soon as possible to propose other ways to prevent Palestinians from obtaining arms.
Hamas says that as a democratically elected government it is entitled to have weapons in order to “defend” Palestinians against their enemy.
“No one has the right to prevent the Palestinians from equipping themselves with weapons as long as the occupation continues,” Hamas representative Osama Hamdan said in Lebanon.

Israeli troops reported back in Gaza
L’arrivée au Proche-Orient mardi 27 janvier de George Mitchell, l’émissaire de Barak Obama, a été accompagnée d’un accès de fièvre susceptible de mettre en péril la trêve intervenue à Gaza. Quelques heures après un attentat ayant coûté la vie à un soldat israélien, les troupes israéliennes ont pénétré dans le secteur sud de la bande de Gaza, à l’est de Khan Younès, et ouvert le feu en direction d’une ferme située dans le secteur, ont indiqué des témoins.

Le ministre égyptien a souligné que les discussions qui se tiennent au Caire avec les différents groupes palestiniens, notamment sur les moyens de “consolider” le cessez-le-feu dans la bande de Gaza, avaient connu “une évolution positive”. Si les choses se passent comme prévu, a encore indiqué le ministre égyptien, la conférence des donateurs pour la reconstruction de Gaza se tiendra “probablement” le 28 février.
Des chars israéliens auraient également tiré des obus sur des maisons palestiniennes et des soldats pris position sur les toits de plusieurs habitations. Un activiste du Hamas circulant à moto et deux autres Palestiniens, dont un enfant, ont par ailleurs été blessés dans un raid aérien israélien dans la même zone, selon des sources médicales.
Ces opérations surviennent quelques heures après la mort d’un soldat israélien dans l’explosion d’une charge au passage de sa patrouille à la frontière de la bande de Gaza. Trois autres militaires ont été blessés, dont un grièvement. Sans revendiquer l’attentat, le Hamas l’a présenté comme “une réponse naturelle aux crimes de l’occupant” après la mort la semaine dernière de deux Palestiniens attribuée à Israël. Le ministre israélien de la défense Ehoud Barak a peu après affirmé que son pays “riposterait” à cette “attaque sérieuse”. Quelques minutes après l’explosion, des accrochages à Khan Younès ont coûté la vie à un paysan palestinien de 24 ans.
Il s’agit des premières violences depuis le cessez-le-feu unilatéral proclamé le 18 janvier par Israël et le Hamas. Elles surviennent avant l’arrivée dans la région du nouvel émissaire américain pour le Proche-Orient, George Mitchell, pour une première mission d’information, après avoir été investi par le président Barack Obama de tous les pouvoirs nécessaires pour parler en son nom. Des tractations sont en cours entre Israël et le Hamas sous les auspices de l’Egypte en vue d’une trêve consolidant un cessez-le-feu.

Israel added Tungsten to its phosphoric bombs used in Gaza
Dr. Essam Hijjawi, a board member in the health committees in the West Bank, revealed Wednesday that Israel used white phosphorus consolidated with Tungsten, a chemical element that has atomic number 74, against the civilians in the Gaza Strip.
Dr. Hijjawi added that this type of chemical weapon is more hazardous than the one used by the US military in Iraq, because Israel improved it by adding Tungsten, which if inhaled dissolves in the blood and damages the arteries in the body.
Regarding the health situation in Gaza, he noted that the technical potentials in the Gaza hospitals are limited and need serious support.
In a new development, Al-Qassam Brigades, the armed wing of Hamas, stated in a communiqué received by the PIC that its fighters fired three mortar shells on a special Israeli force that tried to infiltrate into the east of Al-Maghazi area, in central Gaza Strip.
The infiltrating troops withdrew from the area after they advanced into it for a distance of 500 meters and bulldozed vast areas of agricultural lands.
